I too have a copy of Bryan Beirne's book on the
family O'Beirne. The book is fairly good and
reflects a fair amount of research.
My ancestor, Patrick O'Beirne, emigrated from
Mohill, Co. Leitrim, in 1852, married in NYC, and
died in November 1861, then serving as a gunsmith
in an armory in/near Central Park, Manhattan.
I have also done quite a bit of research on
James Rowan O'Beirne, of Co. Roscommon, who was a
Brevet Brigadier General in the Union Army in the
American Civil War, was a recipient of the US
Army's Medal of Honor for valor at the Battle of
Fair Oaks, VA (May 31-June 1, 1862) and who led
the April, 1865 manhunt for John Wilkes Booth,
the assassin or President Abraham Lincoln. J.R.
O'Beirne went on to many distinguished post-war
careers and died in February, 1917, in New York
City. His grave, unfortunately, remained
unmarked until June 1, 1996, when the NYC Co.
Roscommon Society and the Irish Brigade Assoc.
erected a large monument to him in Mt. Calvary
Cemetery, Queens, NYC, and held a commemorative
service with over 250 people.
Anyone with information on Patrick O'Beirne of
Mohill, Leitrim, or who has or wants info on J.R.
O'Beirne of Roscommon and NYC is welcome to
contact me online at Irish155NY@aol.com.
Regards,
Kevin O'Beirne
