Hi All
Wondering if some kind soul is able to assist me in my research. My gggrandfather, John Frain married Catherine Ward sometime around 1850. The children that I have found so far (with the help of others) are Michael, James, Bridget, Mary, Thomas, Catherine and Anne. I think that all but Anne were born in Loughglynn, Roscommon. Anne was born in Ballaghadereen, Mayo 1864.
Bridget married my ggrandfather, John Kelly sometime 1880. John was from Ardnaree (suburb of Ballina). Can anyone help me locate any other Siblings of John Frain and Catherine Ward, or even when they were married, or the marriage of John Kelly and Bridget Frain.

Thank You
David Birney

I understand part of Mayo became Roscommon parishes. This may be your answer...

Thomas Frayne (Frain) (1806 - 1871) of Barnacawley was my Great Grandfather! He married Mary Coffey (also 1806 - 1871) in 1830. they had 6 children two of whom married into Higgins and Dyer Families. If this Connects with anyone , I would love to hear and swop information. By any chance was Mary Coffey a member of Jim Coffey's Family?

The LDS film will show the baptismal sponsors. It may show the townland.

For a list of townlands in Loughglynn Catholic parish, see the Loughglynn Catholic map at http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/LR_maps.html

Note all the townlands are in Tibohine Civil parish except for Clooncan in Kilkeevin Civil Parish.

According to the “Householders Index” located at the start of the County Roscommon Griffith’s Valuation microfich, persons named Freyne lived in both Kilkeevin and Tibohine Civil parishes at Tithe Applotment.

The 1825 Tithe Applotment records for Tibohine Civil parish are on LDS microfilm 256693 and National Library Ireland microfilm 87 – 25/10.

The 1833 Tithe Applotment records for Kilkeevan Civil parish are on LDS microfilm 256633 and National Library Ireland microfilm 88 – 25/15.

Griffith’s Valuation records for Tibohine Civil parish can be viewed at:
http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/GRIFFITH/ It is important to check all likely surname spellings.

Griffith’s Valuation records for Clooncan townland, Kilkeevin Civil Parish, do not include surnames Frain, Frane, Frayne or Freyne.

You may find the area of land varies in Tithe Applotment records when compared to Griffith’s Valuation. Note that the measurement used was the Plantation or Irish acre, which differs in size from the Imperial or English acre, used in Griffiths Valuation. The ratio is 30.25 : 49. The different types of acres used in each will account for difference in size of land held by a family from one valuation to the other if they appear in both. For example, Killummod townland was 212 acres at Tithe Applotment and 348 acres at Griffiths Valuation. If you apply the ratio to Killummod townland you'll get a small variance which could be attributed to the accuracy of the surveyors.

Once you locate a townland you find the change of occupiers of land from 1857 to c1920 by viewing the LDS Change of occupiers film for the townland.

The 1901 Census of Kilkeevin and Tibohine Civil parishes includes many entries for Frain. Visit http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/ Remember to check the “other occupies column”.

John
