I am currently writing a book about the Roscommon Volunteers of 1916-1-23. Does anyone know of any descendants of the Murphy family who lived in the St. John's area during the War for Independence? I live in Oregon and have a telephone book for Roscommon, but can you guess how many Murphys there are that reside in the area? (Smile)

"but can you guess how many Murphys there are that reside in the area?" Yes, 35 all in Area Code 0902, most in/near Athlone; St. Peter's parish.

Do you want St. John's (which includes Knockcroghery) or Kiltoom? See next post by Pat Lavin for a reference.

Kathleen, You may be able to get a name from the information under Roscommon or a surrounding county in the listing under: http://homepage.tinet.ie/~eirenua/may99/saoirse4.htm

Since there are no emails given, you may have to write or call where perhaps only one person by that name resides. There is a Murphy listed under Roscommon who may know or can get the information you need. The people are probably familar with the history of the area.
