Irish soldiers in UK Army WW1

Has anyone experience of finding records of these men? My great Uncle John Rooney fought in the British army in WW1 and survived. There are far too many John Rooneys listed in the UK records mostly with too little detail to let me identify my man, so I thought I might try from the other end. Althoug...

Fuerty church

Lots of interesting items in this topic. I'd just like to add that the original church at Fuerty was (I think) a Catholic monastery with ancient links to St Cieran, which was taken over at the Suppression by the Church of Ireland. Both religions used the graveyard. The (CoI) church burned down and i...

Nuala,
Could it have been a hedge school? I know there was one in Castlecoote, Fuerty, and where it was, and the GV shows just School House in that spot. But as it would have no legal standing I doubt it appears on any other record.
Good luck!

Thank you, Mike. My aunt was married at the church I always thought was St Kieran's in 1953 (sorry for the previous spelling) and I saw the church there in 2006, and assumed they were the same building. So I was rather thrown by the other name.

best wishes

Church of Our Lady Assumed, Fuerty

Does anyone know just where this church is, in the Fuerty area? I have seen a photo of the foundation stone which is dated in stone 1953, and the photo says Creemully, Fuerty. There's also a photo of the Bishop doing the Dedication of the church, 5th August 1956, and it just says Fuerty church. But ...

Fiona, If your index to the Fuerty graveyard gives the first names as well as surnames, could I ask you please who are the Rooneys buried in graves 88 and 173? and if there are dates too, I would be extremely pleased! It's a funny list I have, because I have actually visited the grave of my McGovern...

There is a McLoughlin grave numbered 160 in the old Fuerty graveyard. There are no first names in the index, however, so I have no idea if that is your girl. If you want a copy of the map of the graves, I can email you one.

cheers

I'm fairly sure of Haughey/Hoghey/Houghey: around Athleague and Fuerty. Americans have it as Hoye.

Hi Andrew, Thanks for the suggestions! I'd actually got that info off-list from John Hunter, and made a visit to the London LDS family history centre. Trawling their films, as you say, is a matter for patience but I did find both my great-grandparents' deaths references, and the GRO in Roscommon has...

Hi John, Thank you for that quick response. Yes, I've got the 1901 and even the 1911 census showing my family in Fuerty: I've also spotted the GV reference, and am assuming the Rooney at the National School is one of mine, but he's too early to help me solve this problem. I also have your great Reso...

Roscommon County Library research, Rooney

Does anyone know of a researcher living in Roscommon town? I'd like someone to try and find an obituary or report of the funeral of my GGM, Bridget Rooney nee Garvey, of Fuerty, and as I don't know the year (only that she was born 1849 and still alive in 1918) it will take some work. I have a feelin...

martin rush

John,

A Martin Rush in Fuerty was the parish priest, but I think that may have been too early for your man. He married various members of my family in the nineteenth century, all in Fuerty.
If I can help more, do ask.

Fuerty graveyard index

Hi Fiona, You make reference below to "the index to Fuerty graveyard". Is this a document I can get a copy of somewhere? I'm reluctant to go straight to Fr Leogue in Athleague as he feels his job is as Parish Priest and not assistant family history researcher, though if that's where I get ...
