Roscommon Co. Flag
Does anyone know if County Roscommon has an official flag? And where they can be purchased? I've seen various flags flying the County colors of blue and yellow with different versions of the insignia bearing the Celtic cross, ram's head, oak leaf and crown. For example, the insignia used on this sit...

Leitrim-Roscommon Townland names and Placenames
I've seen the database of Leitrim-Roscommon townlands names, but has their been any attempt to provide more information about the townland names, e.g. perhaps their origin and meaning from the Irish language or Celtic past and mythology, geography etc? The Irishtimes has a web site http://www.irisht...

St. John's in Baltimore
Is the St. John’s church you are referring to St. John the Evangelist? If so it is located in the 900 block S. Eager Street. My grandparents lived on Valley Street about a block away. I’ve heard it called the “Irish ghetto” of Baltimore. Certainly it was heavily populated with Irish immigrants begin...

Kiltrustan Parish
Kiltrustan parish merged into Strokestown parish in the 1850s. The church still exists and services are held there on Sundays, but it is administered by Immaculate Conception RC Church in Strokestown. For genealogy research your best bet is: http://www.roscommonroots.com/ This is a new, but related ...

The Killing of Major Dennis Mahon
Has anyone read the new book by Peter Duffy, "The Killing of Major Dennis Mahon" of Strokestown? It was published by Harper Collins in the fall 2007. Along with other sources, the book makes good use of the Mahon's private documents located in the NLI. It is a good read about the events le...

Re: Tansey
There is also a townland named Tansyfield located in North Roscommon. It is located about 1/2 mile east of the crossroads a few miles south of Elphin off the R368. It is immediately north of Lisduff, which is on the way to Kiltrustan cemetery.

Re: Landlords
The transfer of land was not directly from the landlord to the tenant. The Irish Land Commission was established in the 1880s. It continued well into the 20th century. It lent money to tenants to buy the land and the Commission handled the transfer. The landlord was paid the full amount directly by ...

What is a "Herd"?
I am asking this question specifically about life in County Roscommon in the 19th century, although I guess it would apply to agrarian culture anywhere in Ireland and Scotland. The Griffith's Valuation and later Irish civil records make mention of the "Herd." What were the duties of a Herd...

LDS availability of Roscommon parish records
I am researching my family history in northern Co. Roscommon. Does anyone know why the Mormon Church (LDS) did not microfilm the Elphin parish records that are available at the National Library of Ireland (NLI) (film numbers P4609 and P4610? I understand one of the goals of the LDS and familysearch....
