The other option for seeing the Griffiths valuation and maps is the Irish Origins web-site. This gives you access to images of the printed valuation and also the related maps, marked up with the holding numbers. It's a subscription site, but a 72 hour subscription is only about £5.00 / US $ 10.00. T...

Hi Nuala, I had exactly the same question - members of my family (from Gaily in Killinvoy, near Knockcroghery) were married in Culleen chapel in the early 1880s, and I suspect my great-grandparents were married there as well. Culleen seems to be the local name for the townland Killeenrevagh (I suspe...

Maggie It seems like the key here is to find a definite death date for your great-grandmother. I only know two places to check that - one is the GRO in Dublin, which may not be very practical for you, depending on where you are; the other is the LDS films at the LDS Family History Centres. They have...

Yes, I have noticed the same thing. I assume this is because when the agent wanted to re-let a holding that had come available, the easiest place to look was among the existing tenants (perhaps one who wanted to move, or was looking for a holding for a son about to be married). BarryB80 - you are ri...

I've not heard that exact term but it could refer to a "lease of 3 lives". These were quite common before the Famine - basically a lease that lasted as long as the three people named in it remained alive. Often, this would be the tenant and two named descendants of his. They were usually h...

I can't help with the specifics of Cloone parish, but I had the same problem in Killinvoy parish (Longnamuck TL). I found the relevant entries included under the neighbouring townland (Galey). The Griffiths valuators used the new "standard" townlands from 1851. The people doing the Tithe B...

Yes, it was the Kilmeane one I was referring to.

Elphin would be quite a long way from Fuerty - up in the North of County Roscommon.

I can't identify Batford itself, but Fuerty is about 2.5 miles south-west of Roscommon town. Ballymurray is about 2.5 miles south-east of Roscommon on the N61 main road to Athlone. It lies about 5 miles due East of Fuerty cross-country. They're both on OS sheet 40 (Discovery Series) from the Ordnanc...

Garricks in Galey Bay

Robert While your posting is obviously from quite some time ago, if by any chance you are still visiting this BB from time to time, I would be very interested in making contact. My grandfather was Patrick James Garrick, born 1871 in Galey Bay. His parents were Michael Garrick and Honoria McNulty. Th...

Patrick Kelly and Sarah Garrick

I am currently researching the Garrick family in Roscommon. My particular branch of the family are from Galey townland, in Killinvoy civil parish, just north of Killeenrevagh. I have identified a number of Garricks living in the area in the period before Griffiths, but your Sarah is new to me, so I'...
