John, many thanks again for your expertise. At least I have now located the property in question. It is still a mystery as to why my grandmother would have gone there in April 1919 when she returned from the USA where she had been since 1910 returning twice in between for visits.(As shown on the new...

Dromahaire - Drum kell house
Has anyone ever heard of somewhere called Drum Kell house, Dromahaire, County Leitrim. This address appears on the incoming passenger lists from new York to Liverpool in 1919 and seems to be the address my grandma gave as her destination. I have searched in vain for anywhere that resembles this name...

I have recently been given this wonderful link. http://staging.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php You can search by name or (better option) townland. It will bring up all occupants of the whole townland and best of all - it has maps! All free of charge. Now on the maps, you can see the...

Thankyou for that, John. I think the townland you mention is more likely. I was looking at James Obrien in the British 1901 census in Oswestry born about 1849. This may or may not be the same person listed as a relative in the household of Thomas Obrien at 1 Mount Street Wrexham in 1881. Thomas is s...

Townland of Caul in Roscommon
The birthplace of someone who may be one of my ancestors is listed on the 1901 census as Caulmil, Ireland. Having looked at the townland database the nearest match is Caul in Roscommon. (I think they did come from Co Roscommon but am not able to verify this) What I am thinking is, does anyone know i...

Jim that is a gem of a piece of information, thankyou again for that. Any help/further information would be very gratefully received. Someone has told me that if a townland has been transcribed as beginning with STRA then that is an English translation and it is truly SRA. That has been of little us...

John, thankyou for that information. Yes I did check the maps on this site and they were most helpful, in fact I printed them out so that I could locate the townlands better. I also found the record on the 1901 census and they appear to be in the townland of Slievenakilla which checks out as this is...

Thankyou Jim for that. It looks like those two children may be my great grandmas siblings. It gives me a bit more info to go on for further research. Sadly the marriage does pre date civil registration as it took place in 1846. Margaret was only 20 then so it is possible civil registration spanned t...

Townlands with similar names
I wonder if anyone can give an opinion on this. I have posted on one or two other boards with little response. A few weeks ago I had an amazing piece of luck. I entered some information on Ancestry and a family tree appeared which is a certain match for my mothers Irish relatives. Unfortunately the ...

Roscommon Heritage Centre
Has anyone out there had any success with requested searches from the Strokestown Heritage Centre? If so,did you have to wait long for a reply. According to an email I received in reply to an enquiry of what they had to offer they quoted a fee of 40 Euros for a family group search which they said th...
