I'm looking for a castle originally owned by the O'Connors. I believe the O'Conor Rau were in Roscommon, so I'm searching here. Isobel Phoebe O'Connor was raised in a castle in the late 1700's and ran away to the US at age 12. She died in 1810 and was supposedly a baroness. Her descendant James Waldrip inherited the castle in 1898 which reverted to the crown because he couldn't afford to pay the taxes.

Statistical Survey of the County of Roscommon by Isaac Weld, pub. 1832. I know it spoke of two O'Commors, 1. pg373. The Castle (at Tulsk) was built by O'Connor Roe in1406. 1499 the Earl of Kildare in the yr 1499, led his forces into Connaught, he threw garrisons into the four castles of Athlone, Roscommon, Tulske and Castlerea. This is in the chapter of the Barony of Roscommon. In the chapter of the Barony of Ballintobber, page484-Belanagare, in the northern part of the western division of Ballintobber, is a small village, remarkable for an old seat of the family of O'Connor Don, M.P.. Page647 lists Grand Jury County Roscommon 1820 lists Owen O'Conor. In 1821 lists O'Conor Don for Grand Jury Co Roscommon, also 1828. Pg 651 listsGand Panel of the Co Ros. lists O'Conor Don, Belanagar. Grand Panel 1829 lists O'Conor, Balangar AND Peter O'Conor, Toomana. Funny this is I have a great Aunt born in Timana or Timanagh or Tumanagh NOT Tumna which is not far from Castleplunket but sinse all of this is phonetic this place"Toomana" may be near Castleplunket where the Ballintobber Castle is. I could go on, but let me know if this is anything to you. Feel free to contact me. E-mail in faster since I don't get to the boards often. Good Luck Julie Kauker

There were at least 2 O'Conors in Co. Roscommon. "The O"Connors of Roscommon assumed the appellation of Rough or Ruadh, and of Dhunne, from the colour of the hair of two rival chiefatins, both of the name of Tirlouch, on ehaving hair that was red, the other brown, ruadh or ruaidh in Irish signifying red, and dhunne or dunn brown. One resided at Ballintobber Castle the other at Ballynafad Castle, remains still visible near Strokestown. Pg.380, Hugh O'Conor Dhunnne, resigned his castle of Bsllintobber to the queen and aaccepted a re-grant and a knighthood. Charles O'Conor Rae, of Ballynafad Castle, did the same. The country of O'Conor Dhunne was formed into the barony of Ballintobber, andthat of O'Conor Rae, into the barony of Roscommon. This is going on forever, there is much for you to read, if you can get this book, get it, If not contact me. Julie Kauker
