Any Morans left in Drumagissaun, Kilglass

Post by Ita Smyth »

I have established with some certainty that my great-grandfather came from Drumagissaunm Kilglass near Strokestown. His father was Roger Moran and his brother was Michael. These three appear in Griffiths valuation in Drumagissaun. John joined the RIC and married Catherine Robinson from Fermanagh in Arva in 1851. There were Morans in the 1901 Census in Drumabissaun but if anyone has any up to date information I would be very grateful, even to tell me what the area is like now.
Ita Smyth

Take a look at www.proni.nics.guv.uk/private/gosford.htm. Arva is a small town in Cavan which was owned by the Baron of Gosford as far back as 1628. There are interesting tidbits on Arva in that website. The Barons of Gosford were actually members of the Acheson family. This will give you some idea what life was like for Catherine in the 1850's. In all likelihood here family were tenants of Gosford.
Mary Evans
