Degnan, Mulherin surnames

Post by Mary (Degnan) Priola »

To Ann O'Rorke: I attempted to put a follow-up msg on your posting relating to the surnames Degnan and Mulhern. My great grandfather was Hugh Degnan who immigrated to the US around 1825 to 1850. He married Mary (Ryan?) and settled in Wilkes Barre, Pa. One of his grandsons was my father, James Martin Degnan who married my mother Ethel Mulherin. I realize the spellings are different and there are so many variations of both names, you may not be able to add to my information but I would appreciate hearing from you if there is any possible connection as some day I would like to visit Ireland and meet some of my family there. Thanks, Mary (Degnan) Priola

Brigid Degnan married to Michael Eardly/Early children were
Eugene b. 22 Nov. 1865, Elizabeth 7 Feb. 1858, Patrick 2/9/ 1860 and Thomas b. 16 March 1863. the Townland given is Curgorman.
2. Townland Ballyfarnon.
The names of these children showing may not have been the only ones - more were probably born elsewhere.
In the 1881 census in Scotland in the household of James Rorke and Mary Early household at 30 Graham St. Edinburgh there was a Patrick Dugnan as a boarder aged 20 - he was employed as a Labourer at the Linlithgow Oil Works at this date. I think he may have been the son of Micahel Eardly and Brigid Degnan. Because the names are spelt slightly differently is not a concern. All of these families intermarried first cousins - 2 brothers married 2 sisters who may have been cousins.
At this time there were about 100 families living in the Edinburgh area from the Lough Allan area in Roscommon. They worked in Edinburgh at the Linlithgow Oil Works, on the roads as labourers and tranymen. They worked long and hard to try and save the fares for a ship's passage from Scotland to America. Hi Ann...thanks for all the information regarding the Degnan family in Scotland; as for the 1881 census in Scotland, the Patrick Degnan listed in the household of James Rorke and Mary Early could not be the Patrick I am seeking info about as his last name was Meehan, and he would be my grandmother Margaret Meehan's husband. However, the families certainly could be related and it is possible Patrick Meehan met my grandmother in Scotland and they may have married before he left for the US. I do not have the census for 1870 for Wilkes Barre Pa as that would tell me more about when they came to the US. My grandfather Martin was born in 1870 so Margaret and Patrick were already married and should be on the census. Martin is the oldest of his siblings. But the information you have been kind enough to give me will help in my search and provides some more clues. I have only recently started this search and already have a ream of paperwork from several different people, but yours is the first with info on the Degnans in Scotland. So, the plot thickens, I only hope I can be as persevering as were my ancestors who had the courage and will to endure the hardships they met to come to this country. Thanks again and if you are interested in the Degnans, particularly in Pa or the NY area, just e-mail me as there are many cousins around. Best wishes, Mary Degnan Priola

Hi again Ann...please forgive my ignorance as I have been away from the computer for some time and am not that computer literate to begin with, so when the Post a Followup section came on the screen, I just presumed, wrongly, that the Name and E-mail sections were to contain the address of the person to whom you want the e-mail to receive; so....now you have a msg addressed to you, from you, and a blurb message when I tried to correct my mistake, and there is no text in that follow-up. Hopefully this msg will get to you OK and I do apologize and thank you again for the info you sent me. Mary Degnan Priola
