&quot;Just Plain Gow&quot;

Post by Rosemary (Gow) May »

Have been told some of the Gow Family was originally MacGowan, I have not found any solid evidence of this. According to LDS familysearch.org web page, there were many Gow's living in Cty Roscommon in later half of 1700's. It is almost impossible to find out further information, hoping someone might have some knowledge of where to go next. Short of hiring a researcher. Maybe someone might have some Church addresses, altho some Gow's were Roman Catholic, some Church of Ireland. What a dilemna.<br>Thanks in advance.

Gow and Gowe (and sometimes Smith) are Anglicised forms of the Gaelic appellation Gobha, meaning 'the smith'. It was a trade designation which took the place of the real surname (now lost).
