A couple of weeks ago I placed a message on this board, seeking information regarding three men named Cox, one of whom was my g.g. grandfather, Daniel, who came to England from Kilglass, Roscommon, sometime during the mid 19th century. The names of the other two were Henry & Patrick. I’ve subsequently discovered that the name of Daniel’s father was Thomas.
The Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) shows four men named Thomas Cox, living in the parish of Kilglass. Three of them in the townland of Ballymartin; one with 98 acres, another 67 acres and the third 13 acres. The fourth Thomas Cox lived in the townland of Gillstown and had 192 acres. The lessor of the Ballymartin plots was named as John Blakeny and the Gillstown land, John Blakeney, most probably the same person.
I am now wondering if anyone has any detail with regard to any of the aforementioned Thomas Cox, if only to eliminate them from my list of possible g.g.g. grandfathers! One surprising thing that I have discovered is that there appears to have been a lot of people with the name Cox in the Kilglass/Ballykilcline area!
I would be most grateful for any information.
Andrew Wood
You can check that elsewhere on this web site.
Nearly a thousand of about 3,000 people evicted by Mahon went to Quebec and half of them died en route or on arrival there. The Canadian book that lists the dead at Grosse Ile in 1847 lists two youths named Thomas Cox; one was 18 and traveled on the Virginius; the other was 7 years old and had passage on the Naomi. Both ships had been chartered by Denis Mahon for his evictees. They had death tolls greater than 50%.
Given the chaos around Strokestown then, and the many people moving or being moved around, I would not limit the search strictly to one parish. Glad you are making such progress!
Mary Lee

Re: COX: Kilglass
One of my precedents, Jane Larkin, daughter of James Larkin (1803-1903) of Marnellsgrove, Galway and Ballygalda, Roscommon, married a Thomas Cox. I believe they moved to the US but not sure, the only reference I have to someplace called Turnville(?). I do not know where Thomas was from. Do not have a birth cert for Jane but her siblings were born between 1831 and 1851 and she would have been slightly older, so guessing around 1830.
Let me know if you have any links to the Larkins on your side.
Best regards,
Tony Larkin
: A couple of weeks ago I placed a message on this board, seeking information regarding three men named Cox, one of whom was my g.g. grandfather, Daniel, who came to England from Kilglass, Roscommon, sometime during the mid 19th century.
