Limerick in mid 1700's
Follow-up: In the 16th Century, James O'Hanley, son of the chief moved to Limerick after a duel (which I guess he lost). His descendands acquired Toreen and other large estates and built Meadstone Castle in Dromin Parish near Bruff. Some family altered the name including Nicholas and John Haly (1646) and Sir John Haly (d 1798) and Chevalier Richard O'Healy of the Irish Brigade in France (died 1816). The name was resumed in Limerick by Robert Hanley who fought with Frederick the Great and died in France in 1821 at 90 years of age. In 1653, Cromwell took the Hanley lands in Limerick and dismantled Meadstone Castle. In 1661, Farriah O'Hanley of Slieve Bawn got his lands back. For Hanley holdings in the 1600's go to the Book of Survey and Distribution; for the mid 1800's go to Griffiths Valuation and the Tithe Applotment Books. If you would like a history of the Hanleys in Ireland go to Message Board at (www.ballykilcline.com). Regards, Pete Hanley
Re: Hanley's in Limerick & Roscommon
I am the granddaughter of Edward (Ned) Henry Hanley who left Roscommon 1911-1913, settled in Vancouver, BC Canada. He was in the RAF in WW1. brother Thomas and sister Theresa immigrated to New York City and brother Peter immigrated to England. There were eight other siblings in the family. We do have a baptismal certificate from 1890 for Ned.
We are related to Tom Hanly who lives in Wales with his wife Joan and to Thomas Hanley of Garden City, Long Island NY USA.
I would be very intested in hearing from family members. We too have begun a family tree, but can only trace it 3 generations.
: : : Any information on Hanley's originally from Roscommon who then mover to Ashford, Co.
