Does anyone know the date of construction of the now disused Mountallen canal which connects the Arigna and Shannon Rivers and Lough Allen? It is located on the southwestern side of Lough Allen, Kilronan Parish, Co. Roscommon and can be seen on the Ordance Survey Map 26, Discovery Series with the note "course of old canal". Thanks.
Ken MacDermotRoe

The website has much interesting information on the early history of Loch Allen but does not touch upon the canal. The date of Mountallen canal's construction and its purpose would be helpful in understanding the history of the Mountallen area. Mountallen was the site of an ironworks probably since the 17th century.
Ken

Ed, I tried to respond to your e-mail of 1 Dec 2001, and I attached a scanned image of your ancestors' Gaffney/Daly marriage at Kilronan Parish. However, my reply to you bounced, with the following message:
"This Message was undeliverable due to the following reason:
Each of the following recipients was rejected by a remote mail server.
The reasons given by the server are included to help you determine why
each recipient was rejected.
Recipient: <egaffney@sgi.net>
Reason: sorry, your envelope sender is in my badmailfrom list (#5.7.1)"

As nobody else has ever had a problem with an e-mail from me, I suggest you contact me again via a different ISP, and I will get that marriage extract to you.
