History of the Diocese of Elphin

Post by Denise Plunkett »

Hello,
Recently I learned that there was a book published in 2000 on the History of the Diocese of Elphin. Would anybody happen to know if that book would be a good source for historical information about the area around Croghan?
Thanks so much,
Denise

If I am anticipating your interest correctly, it does have a brief reference to the Dominican priest, Fr. George T. Plunkett who was born in the parish in 1756. The family emigrated to Belgium where he became a priest in 1788. He served in Ghent before returning to Croghan in 1795,and became Bishop of Elphin in 1814. He died at Versailles, France on his way to Rome in 1827.
The parish histories concentrate mainly on how the anciest parises came to form the modern ones, clergy and church building.
Good luck
Mike
Mike you seem to have a great deal of knowledge about this area. My family Thomas O'Rorke (Mason by trade) was married to Ann Keefe c 1825. I believe they lived around the Lough Allan area but can find no trace of them in the Kilronan Parish records and several other registers have also been searched including Boyle. Where would I go to now - they must have existed because the info came from the back of death certificate issued as a result of a Procurators inquest into the death of their son in Edinburgh in 1882.The story is that he was the last son to leave after the death of his parents. The whole family all went to Edinburgh along with other families from this area and can be seen in the 1881 cenus records. Any help would be appreciated Cheers ann
: : Hello,
: : Recently I learned that there was a book published in 2000 on the History of the Diocese of Elphin.
