Dear Friends,
I am trying to locate the birthplace of my ggrandfather, Michael HICKS, who was born about 1830 somewhere in Ireland. It's not a common Irish name, originally English, I believe, but there are six HICKS families listed in the Griffiths Valuation for County Roscommon in Parishes: Moore and Kilglass. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has HICKS ancestors and who would be willing to share their information with me if it is relevant. My ggrandfather, Michael HICKS immigrated to Scranton, PA around 1850. He was Roman Catholic and worked as a Blacksmith. Thank you. Mary L. Casey in Michigan, USA.

Re: HICKS surname in County Roscommon
Hicks is a prominent line in my family but as you say most are english, cornish in fact and many from Padstow area where all mine are from, unusual to find them in Ireland.
Brendan
