Patrick Gaffney, b. 1860, Kilronan Parish?

Post by Tom McFadden »

Can someone with access to the Kilronan Parish registers tell me if there is a record of the baptism of Patrick Gaffney around 1858-1861. The names of his parents were Michael Gaffney and Ellen Gilrain.
Thank you.

Yes, Tom, you are in luck. On 18 April 1858, the baptism is recorded (in Latin) of one "Patritium" (son of) "Michail Gaffny et Elianna Kilrane". Sponsors: Patrick & Sara Guihan. (Townland of) Cornagee.
Cornagee is close to the west banks of Lough Allen.
E-mail me if you would like a scan of the record.

Around 1876 Michael's name was changed to Ellen Gaffney..it was no 8 on ord. map. Around 1903 name changed first to Michael Guiheen and then to Pat Guiheen in 1906; a 1919 entry shows Pat Michael Guiheen.

Patrick Gaffney married into my McPadden family in Edinburgh in 1884. From his parents' names, I figured he could be from Kilronan.
Apparently, none of Patrick's siblings stayed to take over the land when Ellen died, unless these Guiheens were related.

However, the Guihans (etc.) were forced to change their (too Irish) names to Wynn before they were allowed to leave. I am descended from the Kilronan Guihans, who became the Wynns of Leith. Even today in Kilronan, the surnames Guihan and Wynn are used interchangeably (even withing close family groups).
