I was very fortunate to visit the National Archives in Dublin where the originals of the 1911 census are held, two years ago. The librarians were very skeptical about the number of boxes of returns that I wished to examine(especially since it was only two hours until closing) and kept repeating how BIG the boxes were. I think that they were surprised that I knew what I was looking for. As I looked at the records from the townland where my mother was born (Eden, which is several miles from the Ballenaglera church where she was baptised)
I realized that I was looking at some of the only tangible evidence of her father, Michael Keegan; his original signature on the paper. Because he died in 1914/15 in Scotland without ever seeing his child, it was especially meaningful to touch the page and to be able to tell my mother about it.
Good luck on your search for folks in Ballenaglera.
Sharon
