Post by Kathryn (Byrnes) Stephens »

Looking for family info on Bernard F. Mitchell, (reportedly) born Castlerae, County Roscommon in 1849. Emigrated to U.S. April 1874 using passport stolen from his brother while family was at Mass. Lived in NY, IL, and IA. Married Catherine Frances Flynn (daughter of Peter Flynn and Anastasia Maher or Mahr) in 1878 and died in 1923.
Bernard had 4 brothers and 2 sisters: Margaret, Michael, Patrick, Bridgit, Mary, Bartley, James.

It might be only coincidence, but the parallels are striking to Mitchells connected to my family. My great grandmother was Susanna Carroll, daughter of Nellie Finan and John Carroll of Castlerea, and she had a sister Mary who was married to James Mitchell. At the time of the 1900 Census, Mary and James Mitchell lived in Hayes Township, Crawford County, Iowa (near Vail, Iowa), and family memory has it that they may have lived in Sterling, Illinois before moving to Iowa.
Also living in Hayes Township was Bernard F. Mitchell and his wife Kate and their children. Bernard is shown as born in 1850 in Ireland, and emigrating to America in 1874.
