Anybody know of a good map showing the townlands of Kilronan Parish, online or otherwise? I know the names of the townlands from the lr townland search page, but I want to know their placement in the parish, etc. Also, can anyone tell me a little about the townland of Seltannaveeny there? My Duignan line was known to have lived there, and I'd love to know more. Best regards, Bill in California

My special thanks to Mary, and also to Brian. In case you are interested in my Kilronan connection, it takes a bit of explaining, but here it is:
Records I have come across would indicate that my gg-grandmother, Mary Dignan, was from Seltannaveeny, Kilronan parish, County Roscommon, Ireland. Mary Dignan was married to James Kilmartin 5 Dec 1844 at nearby Ardcarn Parish, County Roscommon. In the baptism record of their daughter Bridget (baptized 1 Oct 1845) it lists the parents as James Martin & Mary Dignan, and the baptism record of their daughter Catherine (baptized 28 Jan 1850) lists the parents as James Gilmartin & Mary Dignan; all in the same Ardcarn parish register. Several families appear among the records with all three surname variants (Martin, Kilmartin, and Gilmartin) there as well; not uncommon for the time.
The family of James Martin & Mary Dignan had emigrated to East Lothian County (then Haddingtonshire), Scotland, sometime after 1850, where they worked the farms of Prestonkirk Parish and Whittinghame Parish. In all later records, James appears only as James Martin. Many Irish families arrived there along with mine.
In the 1896 death record I found (via the Scots Origins pay website) for my gg-grandmother, Mary Martin (nee Dignan), it lists her parents as Thomas Dignan & Bridget McLaughlan (as spelled in the record). Her parents were known residents of Seltannaveeny, Kilronan Parish, County Roscommon, Ireland, and my Mary was likely born there. This is my Kilronan connection. Other researchers have informed me that in the Kilronan parish register, there is a Bridget Duignan b. 4 Feb 1828 Seltannaveeny to Thomas Duignan & Bridget McLaughlin (the same parents as Mary), as well as a John Duignan b. 14 Jun 1829 Seltannaveeny to the same parents. This is very important to me, because it is the first specific townland that I can trace my ancestors to in County Roscommon. I'm told that the Kilronan records are spotty for some of those earlier years, and my Mary's (circa 1827) birth/baptism doesn't appear among the existing records there.
I wonder if my Martin family was from Kilronan, too? James Martin (Mary Dignan's husband) was born circa 1826 Ireland. In James' 1889 death record (also from Scots Origins), it lists his parents as Patrick Martin & Catherine Pow. Interestingly, his mother does not appear as "Catherine Martin m.s. Pow", which is how her reference would normally appear in the Scots records, but simply as Catherine Pow instead. This
suggests, I'm told, that Patrick Martin & Catherine Pow were not married when James was born, or anytime afterward, in all probability.
Trying to find James Martin's (circa 1826) Irish birth record has been exceedingly difficult. Trying to find his father, Patrick Martin, is also quite a task, as there are many candidates with that name in County Roscommon, and elsewhere, appearing in various records (Griffith's Valuation, etc.), and he may well appear as Patrick Kilmartin, and/or Patrick Gilmartin, too. I have had some limited success with Catherine Pow, however, who appears to have been born in 1789, at St. Ninian's, Stirlingshire, Scotland, to James Pow & Catherine Bell. The details surrounding the union of the Irish Patrick Martin and the Scottish Catherine Pow remain elusive.
I do know this at least: Catherine Pow did find herself pregnant in Ireland by Patrick Martin, at some point, and she did give birth to their son James around 1826 somewhere on the emerald isle, and James Martin (or Kilmartin or Gilmartin) did marry Mary Dignan (a likely native of Seltannaveeny, Kilronan parish, born around 1827 to Thomas
Duignan & Bridget McLaughlin) at Ardcarn in 1844, and they had at least two daughters there (Bridget in 1845, and Catherine in 1850) before emigrating to East Lothian County, Scotland... where they had at least six more known children, including my g-grandfather, Patrick, in 1856.
Lots of research left to do. If any of this rings any bells, please drop me a line. Best regards, Bill... I can also be reached at: contactbill@hotmail.com

Re: Map of Kilronan, and my connection...
Dear Bill...saw your message of Jan 23,2002 on the Leitrim-Roscommon home page. I have tried to cross reference the Mary Dignan/Duignan/Degnans and have the same info you have on James Martin and Mary Dignan marrying and moving to E. Lothian Cty, Scotland. My father was James Martin Degnan, born in Wilkes Barre, Pa. in 1870 was the son of James Hugh Dageman/Degnan and Maria (maiden name unk, could have been Ryan) both probably from Ireland. I do not have any information that James Hugh went to Scotland prior to immigrating to the US. I have not been able to trace my Degnan side to Ireland yet either; James Hugh appears to be the first of the family to immigrate and is listed as James Dageman on the 1870 US Federal Census but this could be a misspelling by the enumerator. After that it appears as Degnan. There are two James Degnans on prior census records but no way of knowing if they are the same person.
My grandmother was Margaret/Marg'rete Meehan who immigrated with her mother Ann (maiden name unknown) in 1878 to 1880 when she was 7 to 10 years old. Her father Patrick Meehan apparently was already in the US. Both families settled in Luzerne County, Pa. eventually Wilkes Barre, Pa.where many of them still live.
I would appreciate any help you might have regarding the Duignan and/or Meehan families. I would be glad to send you a list of the Degnans I know of in my family however I do not have your email address. Thank you in advance. Mary Degnan Priola
