To me Marcus is an unusual name. Is it a common name in Ireland?

Historically, Marcus seems to have been restricted to Antrim, where there were quite a few of them (and probably still are).

My above comment re Marcus relates to Marcus as a surname. As a firstname it comes from the Latin family name for the god Mars. I don't know where it originally had its strength in Ireland, but it is now found across the globe. For example, Sir Marcus Oliphant is one of Australia's famous scientists.
