Omar..... a common first name?

Post by Dede »

My great grandfather was Omar Sparling. I believe Omar is a bit rare. It sounds Arabic to me.
Omar is Arabic, meaning 'highest' or 'first son' or 'eloquent'. In Ireland, it is certainly not as common as Michael. However, the famous film star Omar Sharif was, in real life, Michael Shalhoub!
It probably means that my grandfather was either the first born or the first born son.
