I am under the assumption that people couldn't move very often during and right after the Potato Famine, therefore if a couple married in Athlone, Roscommon in 1849, more than likely they were born there. I know the day and the church. Should I just write to the church to see if there are birth certificates for my great great parents?

The priests are over-burdened. Write to the Heritage Centre in Strokestown. See their Web page at www.roscommonroots.com

I guess that I submitted my respose to your letter before I had it written, thus the previous message is screwed up. But here goes with the reply that I meant to send. Yes, definatly write to the parish church----you can always make a small offering. The Heritage Center will surely charge you.<br>I wrote to the church where my GM was baptized and the parish secretary sent me information on marriages and births for the whole family going back to the 1840's

Re: Marriage in 1849
We visited Stokestown to inquire on info.,filled out papers, paid the fee's went home and waited 3+ months for info. The info.they sent us was the info I had given them from the church records at Loughglynn Roman Catholic Parish that I had found. As a matter of fact I had more info.then they did so we were quite dissapointed. My suggestion would be to get as much info.together as you can and plan a trip over to Ireland. It is a wonderful adventure and very safe.
