Why don't you go to your nearby LDS Family History Center (check the phone book) and arrange to borrow the microfilm of baptisms and marriages for St. Nathy's Cathedral. It is no. 1279232, and it contains marriages from 1830 and baptisms from 1851. Unfortunately townlands were not identified until the 1890s for marriages and the 1860s for baptisms, but with luck you might be able to identify one or two additional generations in your family. You might also look at the CD-ROM which contains the index of landholders in the Griffith Valuation Survey of the 1850s. You can also read up on the history of the area in a book by Maire McDonnell-Garvey entitled "Mid-Connacht - the Ancient Territory of Sliabh Lugha", Drumlin Publications, 1995. Larger libraries probably have a copy, but it may very well be out of print now. There are no Sharkeys on the list of tenants in Toobracken for the estate of Arthur G. Costello in 1885 in an appendix there, so St. Nathy's is your best bet. Good Luck. <br>

Re: Sharkey family from Roscommon
Actually, I have a good bit of Sharkey information--I suspect already that your Peter Sharkey is part of my ancestor's clan, just based on the names you gave. If you run a search on the archived bulletin board messages, you will see some of my information. Also, feel free to contact me directly. I will try and follow up with more information. At the moment, I'm pressed for time.
