Looking for help with my gg grandparents. Patrick McLaughlin(26) married Bridget McInroy(25) in Scotland in 1855 both have Leitrim as their birthplace. Patrick's parents were Michel McLaughlin +Bridget O'Connor. Bridget's parents were Luke McInroy+Helen McSherry.<p>Believed to be from Manorhamilton-grateful for any help-I'm stuck<p>Thanks

They may have changed it.<br>

My GGgrandfather had one record spelling McGloughlin, bit all subsequent records have it without the G. Also the Scot version is Mac Lachlan. Your name is definitely McLoughlin or McLaughlin. There are a few in the 1901 census with the "a" spelling. I would investigate both.<br>

There was no 'official' spelling of any name except for possibly some old English 'lordly' names. Even today people spell their name as they do because their families spelled them that way. It would be a grave mistake to exclude any spelling of any name from your researches just because it is spelled differently from yours.<p>I have compiled c. 3000 records of births etc from church records and the variations of spellings within families are legion. For your name I have McGloughlin, McGlaughlin, McLoughlin, McLaughlin all within the same family over about 40 years. As you approach the end of the 19th century you find that spellings do tend to be stabilised but before say 1860 expect anything!<p>As another example; Burns, Beirne, Byrne, Byrn, Beirn, O'Beirne, O'Brien, MacBrien, MacBrine can all be members of the same family.<p>Good hunting but remember TRUST NOTHING.<p>

:Well maybe this will help. My father was born Denis McLoughlin in Rosinver Co Leitrim in the year 1907. He had an uncle Patrick who migrated here earlier. Your whole letter struck me funny because there are McSherry's from the same town here also and my godmother is named Sarah McElroy which I think is the name (McInroy) in your letter. Manor Hamilton is the larger town near where they all lived. Sarah's husband Hugh was my dad's cousin or so we were told. I have been to Leitrim and visited my cousins James and JOseph who still live there. Hope this helps. kb

Sorry, can't help, but I'm also looking for info on McLaughlin's from Leitrim.<p>I have a GGGGF, Torrence Kelly, who married a Mary McLaughlin, circa 1820-25. Both were from Leitrim and spent their entire lives there. They had at least four children: Patrick, Bridget (who married John Daly/Dailey), Ann (who married Farrell Conlon) and John. Bridget never emigrated and stayed in Leitrm, though the other three children came to America around 1850.<p>Does this mean anything to anyone?<p>thanks...<br>Jerry<p>
