Searchable censuses

Post by Tim McGarry »

Just in case it hasn't been mentioned, searchable censuses have been added on-line to help us. They can be found at:
http://www.familysearch.org (Each with an API - all person index)

Census to the left of the page include:
1880 United States Census
1881 Canadian Census
1881 British Census
Irish records are there in a sense, in that as some migrated prior to 1881 they should be registered as 'born in Ireland.'
However, a word to the wise, if you don't find your relative in the 1880 Census and you know they must be there...it has major mistakes in spelling and listings, so when you find someone remember to look up their family and there you might find that elusive relative.
Best of Irish Luck, Tim McGarry at TMcGarry@irish4ever.com searching COLL, MURRAY,MURAT, CARNEY, BEIRNE, EGAN, NOONAN, SHARKEY, DALY, CASSERLY, BRENNAN, O'RORKE, McALLEN, MURPHY, REDMOND, WICKS and of course McGARRY

There are others, too. For example, the 1891 British Census and the 1901 Scottish Census are available for perusal on-line. The English 1901 Census is either on-line now, or due on-line shortly. You can even download extracts of entries of interest (all for a fee, of course).

O'Rorke interests

Post by Tim McGarry »

Hi Anne, Thanks for the inquiry. I have not gotten into the O'Rorke's yet but believe they are masons as their cousins were. My family is mostly from Roscommon, but I understand there's a Lilly O'Rorke from Limerick. Ring any bells? Any of my other surnames familiar? -- One will notice, however, that the free on-line searchable 1881 British Census at the familysearch website <www.familysearch.org> does not currently contain Scotland in their database (as of this writing, Nov. 2002). So, it is not really the full census, which is a real shame, as many Irish came over to Scotland... like mine. Hopefully, that will be remedied soon. Perhaps we should all send e-mails to them, and ask where Scotland went ;)
