Kane - Finan - Quinn Connections in Castlerea

Post by Mark Quinn »

Has anyone run across a Roderick Kane from Castlerea in their research? I see him listed in the Griffith's listing. He interests me because my g-g-grandfather, Patrick Quinn (Cloonfower, Castlerea), married (around 1835) Catherine Finan whose mother was said to have been a Kane. Since the name Roderick later became a family name for Quinns and Finans, I suspect a connection and would like to have information to prove or disprove this theory.
Many thanks.

Mark,
I received a snail-mail letter from Tom Fitzsimmons back in
my pre-computer days of 1996 asking about this marriage.
Apparently you and he were emailing way back then.
Your Quinns and Finans lived in an area where they might
have gone to church either in Tibohine (Loughglynn) Parish
or in Kilkeevan (Castlerea) Parish. I regret to say that,
assuming the Patrick Quinn-Catherine Finan marriage
occurred in 1835, there isn't going to be a parish record
of it anywhere. LDS has the Tibohine Parish Register
on microfilm (FHL 0989753), and I have gone through it
in an effort to locate the Patrick Quiin - Catherine
Finan marriage. Unfortunately there is a gap in that
register which lasted from March, 1827 to February, 1836,
and which covers the period that this marriage would
have occurred.
It is the same situation with Kilkeevan Parish. LDS does
not have that parish on microfilm, but the National Library
of Ireland has all parishes. I just looked at their
website: www.nli.ie and there was a gap in the Kilkeevan
Parish register which lasted from April, 1820 until
October, 1838. I think the only way you will be able
to document that marriage will be if someone out there
has a family bible, etc which has been passed down with
the information in it.
Sorry to be such a downer.....
Tom Voyles
