You may have a relative still there.

: Seeking info on Richard le Strange, son of Sir Thomas,
: who settled at Castle Lestrange. Does the castle still
: exist? Are there any L'Estrange's still living in Roscommon?
On page 390 in the book The Heart of Ireland, it says this about the "strong" castle at Roscommon: "It subsequently fell into the hands of the Irish, who kept possession of it till 1566, when it was retaken for the Queen by Sir Henry Sidney, Lord Deputy, who placed Sir Thomas L'Estrange in it as Governor, with a garrison of infantry and 20 horsemen. In the Parliamentry war of 1641, the castle was held for the King by Sir Michael Earnley, with a detachment of of the President of Connaught's troops…"
On page 394, about Roscommon Abbey, it says: "The Annals of Lough Key say: 1573, the site was leased to Thomas L'Estrange."
It is therefore possible that Roscommon Castle may have been known at one time as Castle L'Estrange.

The book The Heart of Ireland (about 500 pages) is a history of Roscommon, Leitrim, Sligo and adjoining areas of Mayo. It is out of print and hard to find. It was written by P. A. Sharkey in 1928 and was sponsored by about 300 people from the areas covered in the book, but mostly by people from Boyle. The sponsors are listed in the book. The book covers the area from prehistoric times to the late 1800s, with some information to the time of print. It covers most prehistoric sites, monuments and graves; castles; battles; mythology; sites of interest; many families; geographical and topographical features; etc.

Re: Castle Lestrange,Roscommon
Jerry, I came across a reference to a "Castle Strange" in the Heart of Ireland book, page 332. This is taken from a description written by a J. O'Donovan in 1837. "I am told here that the old house called Castle Strange at Athleague never belonged to the L'Estranges, and that it is only seventy years old." The Athleague mentioned here is apparently on or near the shore of Lough Ree, not far from the small village of Lecarrow between the towns of Roscommon and Athlone.

Are there any L'Estrange's still living in Roscommon?

Jerry, I came across an article from the Dec. 23, 1973, issue of the Roscommon Herald. It might contain information about Roscommon Castle and Roscommon Abbey you are looking for. The documents are from the Journal of Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland. I don't know how you could get these. Perhaps the Georgian Society in Dublin might know. (I included the whole list of books and periodicals in case others are interested in books on Co. Roscommon.)

Roscommon Herald, December 28, 1973
Weekly Look Around With the Editor

A couple of weeks back, I published a letter from Mr Derek Patk.
