McElroys at Kiltycreaghtan & Tinacarra, Boyle

Post by LoisMacElroyWells »

I am researching the McElroy family in Boyle. My g-grandfather was George McElroy m. 1859 to Catherine ("Red" Catherine). My paternal grandfather Adam was the eldest of their (10) children & first of (4) sons to emigrate to Lowell, Mass. I believe the father of George was named Adam, and may have had other sons named William, Samuel, George and John.

In Griffiths Valuation (c. 1857/58 in Roscommon) I find George McElroy in the Townland of Kiltycreaghtan and a John and William McElroy in Tinacarra.

Family oral history mentions both of these townlands. Can anyone provide information on how close these townlands are/were to each other?

Thank you!

Lois:

The two townlands are close. Both are about four miles west of the town of Boyle. Kiltycreaghtan is about two miles north of Tinacarra.

Kiltycreaghtan and Tinacarra townlands adjoin. They are located about two miles west of Boyle town. Both townlands are in Boyle Civil parish.

For the location Kiltycreaghtan and Tinacarra townlands see the Boyle Catholic parish map at
http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/MAPS/BoyleRC.html

The Boyle Catholic parochial records for the period are listed on the LDS British Isles Vital Records CD. The absence of McElroy from the church records suggests that the family were not Catholic.

For the 1858 Griffith’s Valuation records for Boyle Civil parish see http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/GRIFFITH/

To check the change of occupiers of both townlands from Griffith’s Valuation to c1920 see LDS film 867954

There are two entries for McElroy in the 1901 Census for Tinacarra townland.

Your George and Catherine are listed in the 1901 Census for Kiltycreaghtan townland. Check the “other occupiers” column for the surname Cryan in Kiltycreaghtan townland.
See http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/

According to the National Library “Householders Index”, no McElroys occupied land in Boyle Civil parish at Tithe Applotment in 1833. The Tithe records for Boyle Civil parish are on LDS film 256575.

The LDS British Isles Vital Records CD lists the Civil marriage of John Macelroy and Mary Robinson on 8 Nov 1860. Registered in Boyle Registrar’s District.
Groom’s father Adam Macelroy
Bride’s father George Robinson. LDS film 101414 will contain further details.

Marriages for the children of John Macelroy are also listed on the LDS British Isles Vital Records CD (Anne married Thomas Evans 1860, George married Ellen Duignan 1853).

Dear John: After posting my message last evening, I did some further exploration on the Leitrim-Roscommon links to the Griffiths & the 1901 census. I did find some of the information you so kindly mention in your reply. Your specific leads to the other sources are wonderful! Thank you for such a clear and inclusive list of LDS CD and films. I am sure this will help advance my research in Ireland.

Three of the four sons of George and "Red" Catherine McElroy remained in the Lowell, Mass area and this has made my search here relatively straightforward. A cousin now living in Arizona also has been generous in sharing the results of his research. I think I am now ready to dig further back into Irish records, and perhaps make some additional discoveries to share with other McElroy descendants.

Thank you, and I will repeat my previous offer to Roger McDonnnell (who also responded quickly to my post): If I can assist you with any research in the Boston/New England area please ask.

Lois,

I haven't been in contact for a while but when I saw your posting, I thought I should send you a note. We've moved to Dallas but will be moving again to San Antonio later this year. I haven't gotten any more information on our ancestors but did want to pass along that my father died on November 18 of last year.

If you learn anything on the McElroys, please let me know. PS, you can access my website at:

Take care,

Rob
