I've come across an apparent oddity - can anyone help.
Studying Doyle's of Mohill PLU, I've come across a Pat Doyle wed to either Anne or Mary Scollin. They lived in Fenagh and had 3 births registered in Fenagh R.C. Church records. Matching these against various online searches, I've found 1 equivalent listed on Genealogy.Com bulletin board. What's confusing me is that this birth is listed as 'Drumshanbo'. Other births on the same listing mention recognisable Mohill districts such as Rinn or Rowan.
So could anyone help with 2 questions:
1: What PLU was Drumshanbo District associated with?
2: Was it at all common or possible to register births in districts other than those in which they lived?
ANy help appreciated.

Thanks for the comprehensive answer, John. I intend visiting the CRO tomorrow, so that's another one for me to check.
On a more general note, do you, or anyone reading, know why or how somebody would be (could be) registered in a District in which they didn't live? What was the law, or practice - how did birth information get to the Registrar?
Thanks again.
Tom

From my notes on baptisms:
"Many families had children baptised in more than one parish. The practice of having the first born at the home of the wife’s parents was not uncommon. A family, although resident in one parish, may have been geographically nearer to a chapel in a neighbouring parish".
Maybe the same applied to Civil Registration.

I found 6 births for Patrick Doyle and Anne Scallin/Skollen/Scollon/Scollen at LDS using the International Genealogical Index.
Patrick 1 Aug 1866 Drumshanbo
Michael 14 Jan 1865 Drumshanbo
John 2 Nov 1868 Leitrim
Anne 28 Oct 1870 Leitrim
Margaret 1 Jul 1872 Leitrim
Anne 16 Aug 1875 Leitrim
I am looking for information for my Drumshanbo Scollin family so I sent to LDS for the birth record for Patrick. These are civil birth records. The family was living in the townland of Drumgood (Drumgud). A Catherine Mulvy who was present at the birth registered the birth. She signed with her mark (many people did). From maps on this site Drumgud is in Kiltubbrid parish but right on the Fenagh border.
Ireland.com has marriage and baptism records from the Leitrim Genealogy Centre online (just names and dates but no locations). A Patrick Doyle married a Bridget Scollan in 1859. I don't know whether this is the same couple or not.
I hope this helps a little.

This is interesting alright. From the Fenagh R.C. Parish records, Patrick Doyle and Anne Scollan had 3 children:
Mary 1857
Bridget 1861
William 1863
I was looking through the Fenagh records in the NLI just today and saw these listed, so they seem fairly definite. However, I have seen Patrick and Anne listed online as parents of Michael in Drumshanbo in 1865. This was what prompted my question. I was also in the Central Registrar's Office today in DUblin. It lists a Michael Doyle born in Carrick On Shannon in 1865. The reference number if Volume 3, Page 68. I've ordered a copy certificate. If it confirms that Patrick and Anne were the parents, it'll be interesting to see what townland is listed for them.
I don't know which townland in Fenagh these characters lived in but if Drumgud is close to Fenagh, perhaps they moved? I'll be happy to share the information from the cert with you when I get it, if you're interested? Just let me know.
I agree with you that the only Doyle - Scollan marriage I've found to date is that of Patrick and Bridget. But I ran out of time on my researches today, and may not get back to them for a while.
Finally, I have also come across a wedding between ANdrew Doyle, of Fenagh, and a Mary Scollan. The Fenagh church records show them having two children (at least):
9 Sept 1839, Matthew, witnesses Patt Doyle and Margaret ?
14? Sept? 1841, Mary. Witnesses John Doyle and Ellen ??
The townland on both is hard to decipher, but seems to be Corrachoosaun.
I hope this is of some use to you.

I am interested in whatever you find relating to Scollins in Leitrim.
Regarding Andrew Doyle and Mary Scollan, I have a Mary Doyle born about 1841 daughter of Andrew Doyle and Mary Scollin of Leitrim living in Danbury Connecticut. Andrew was there in the early 1850s because he remarried before 1855 and that record is online.
Mary Doyle, their daughter, married a Francis Scollin also from County Leitrim in about 1870.
I found her death certificate and it lists Andrew Doyle and Mary Scollin of County Leitrim as her parents. Never did I think I would find her birth in Leitrim. I think that I am related to her husband's Scollin family.
This is going to have me looking in a different part of Leitrim. Thanks very much for sharing it.
