Gaffney, McGreevey, Kilboe or Killboy

Post by Ralpha »

I am seeking information on Michael James (?) Gaffney, born 1866 at Boyle, Roscommon, and emigrated to US in 1886. Our family lore says he came as a ship’s crew (perhaps the SS Catalonia) and just stayed. He married Marie or Mary McGreevey (spelling?, she migrated in 1885) in Brooklyn about 1893. Eventually they lived on Caton Ave in Brooklyn; the house was in the family until 1990. They had 9 kids, 6 lived. Michael and Maria’s ages rarely changed 10 years between censuses. For example, their ages were 7 years apart in the 1900 census and the same age in the 1930 census

Michael’s parents were Mary Kilboe (Kilboy?) and John Gaffney, confirmed on LDS site. No additional info on Mary Kilboe.

There was a daughter Bridget and perhaps a brother Miles in addition to Michael.

“Mount Fallon” is associated with them. I don’t know if it is a place, street, farm…

John Gaffney's parents were Mary and Thomas Gaffney. Her maiden name was also Gaffney. One of them was from the black sheep side of the family; I assume that means one was wealthy or landed, and the other was not. One of them is associated with ownership of a piece of property that was an apple orchard or was called apple orchard. The location might have been Knockvicar, Boyle, Roscommon.

All of Michael and Maria’s children and most of their grandchildren have died. My Dad appears to be one of the last of the grandchildren and will soon be 80. He has more questions than answers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am just now working my way around the Irish sites and wasting a lot of my time.

Ed, I could tell you were a wealth of information! Thanx so much. I am going back to the LDS site to figure out why I could not find Bridget when I searched there.

Wish i could be of some assistance to you.

Hi Ralpha
Maybe I can add a little to the information Brian sent you. I found these entries in my Kilronan records.
9/2/1857 Anna was born to John Gaffney and Maria Gilboo
10/14/1858 Miles was born to John and Maria Gilboo Gaffney
Miles married Brigid Flynn of Rover on 5/23/1883
3/25/1860 John or Joan was born....not sure of gender of the Latin entry
3/24/1861 Maria was born
2/15/1865 Bridget was born...she married James Lee of Lislea on Nov 19 1889
5/15/1869 Gulilmumwas born....entry showed Kilboo not gilboo for mother.
All birth entries were in townland of Srabragan.
check out 1901 census for this townland....It shows Miles and Bridget and their children. Note also that Miles's mother is living with them. The ages are off but that is rather common in Irish records.
These are Miles's children....Michael born 12/29/1886, Anna born 1/29/1885 and John born 6/24/1889.

I did not find James Lee and Bridget on 1901 Census....these are their children Bernard Lee born 1/22/1890, James Lee born 7/9/1891 and Mona born 4/13/1893 maybe they emigrated!

Hope this helps your family research....Ann

Hi again,

In checking one of my family names on a Boston manifest I found Bridget Lee 26, bernard 4, james 2,and maria . They arrived aboard the SS Bothnia in Boston on april 17, 1894. They were going to their husband and father, James Lee in Nashua, New Hampshire. They came from Srabragan, County Roscommon. I checked and found that James arrived aboard the SS Scandinavian on May 11th 1893.

Hope this helps ! Ann

Ed, Brian, Ann

Thank you so much for these gems. I have been caring for grandchildren for the last month (Camp Gramma) and had little time for research. I had made a trip to the local LDS library and am learning how to use their resources better.

My Dad will be absolutely thrilled with all of these clues. I believe they will trigger memories of stories he may have forgotten. I am breathless with all of the information you have unearthed. I wish I had something to offer in return. Anyone need research in Florida?

Ed, I spoke with a cousin and your suggestion of Mountallen agrees with stories he had been told. Thanx for that. The details on the Gaffney/Gaffney marriage are great.

Brian, I have a great-aunt Margaret as well as cousins. This could be another piece. Latin, huh? I took 3 years but doubt I remember much.

Ann, I will map out dates and names. Thanx so much for all the info. Not sure what the July 31 note was about? Do you think Gulilmum is William? Gilboo = Kilboe makes sense to me.
