MARY CONNOR born in Cloonroughan abt 1850

Post by mppwalsh »

I am looking for information about Mary Connor born in Cloonroughan, Elphin(abt 1850) to Stephen Connor a farmer. She married Patrick Tiernan in 1881 and they lived in Tullycartron, Elphin. Any info concerning the Connor or Tiernan would be greatly appreciated.

Stephen Connor, Cloonroughan, Elphin was married to Winifred Nerney. They had at least 3 children:

Catherine married Thomas Diffley, Tansyfield, Elphin in June 1868.
Stephen (born abt. 1852) married Elizabeth Connor (born abt. 1862) in February 1882. Elizabeth was the daughter of another Stephen Connor of Doughloon, Kiltrustan and Ellen Gill. Stephen remained in Cloonroughan.
Mary (born abt. 1854) married Patrick Tiernan (born abt. 1851), Tullycartron, Elphin in May 1881.

See the 1901 Census on the Leitrim-Roscommon site for details of their children.

Hope this helps in your quest.

Mike,
Do you know if some of the Nerney family came to New York City? They pronounced it Neary.
I remember the name being mentioned by my Grandmother, Winifred Tiernan.(Patrick and Mary's oldest daughter) She came to NYC about 1900.

I'm afraid I don't know if any Nearys went to the US, but it's pretty likely that they did. You might try the Ellis Island site for Nearys from Elphin. By the way, I probably mistook "Neary" for "Nerney" due to poor handwriting or faded paper.

Best regards

Connor of Cloonroughan townland

Post by John Hunter »

A number of Nerney families occupied houses at Killeen West AKA Culleen townland.

In c1820 Roger Nerney and Catherine or Mary Conry relocated their family from Killeen West to nearby Clooncoyoge townland. Children of Roger & Mary/Catherine include:
John born 1808,
Eleanor born 1811 – married Patrick O’Connor (AKA Connor),
Mary born 1813,
Thomas born 1816,
Cornelius born before 1822,
Margaret born 1926 – married James Beirne, lived Killummod townland – family moved to Brisbane, Australia 1862.

For the location of Cloonroughan, Killeen West and Cloonboyoge townlands see Elphin Catholic parish map
http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/MAPS/elphin_rc.html

The LDS microfilm copy of the baptismal record for some of her children, lists Margaret’s maiden name as Neary.
