Hi Everyone,
I recently traced my GGGGrandfather to Roscommon. His name was Edward FitzMaurice, born about 1770 in Aughrim parish, town of Carrick on Shannon, Roscommon county. He married Mary (Law?) about 1804. He enlisted in the 101st Regiment of Foot (Duke of York's Irish) on 6 Dec. 1805. He served with this regiment over 10 years and then on to other regiments, and served in the West Indies at least 6 years with the 101st. He also served with the 9th Royal Veteran Battalion and the 1st Royal Veteran Battalion before retiring with over 20 years of service.
He emigrated to New Brunswick, Canada in 1832 with his wife and 5 of his 7 children. In 1832, one son, name unknown was serving with the 44th Regiment of Foot (the East Essex) as a sergeant. In 1832, another son, name unknown was serving with the 30th Regiment of Foot (Cambridgeshire) as a sergeant. Of the 5 children that went with him to New Brunswick, 4 are Known: Mary Ann, born about 1816 in Jamaica, John, born about 1823 in Jamaica, James, born about 1825 in Ireland, and Ellen, born about 1827 in Ireland, the fifth child that came to New Brunswick is unknown.
Names that are very common in this line are John, James, Thomas, Edward, Mary, Ellen, Margaret, Sarah, and Lydia.
He may have had a brother or close cousin named John FitzMaurice. This John, also served in the 101st Regiment of Foot from 30 Jan. 1806 to 7 Jan. 1817, and also served in the West Indies. John was born about 1785 in the parish of Killucan, Roscommon county.
I would like to connect with anyone who has FitzMaurice's located in Roscommon during this time (1770+) or who may have any info or help.
