Doorstep: The McSheras you are looking for are from Fostragh, Knockvicar, Boyle. Some of the family is still there, I understand. One of the people in your list, John (I believe), was alive until fairly recently. He lived to be over 100 years. Jane Gaffney was from Derreenine, a townland next to Fostragh. She had three or four sisters, one of which I am descended from. There are McSheras from this family in two towns outside of Worcester, Massachusetts. Most came here long ago, but one of these here now is from Fostragh. You can look at census lists on this BB to verify the info. Best wishes, Paul.

Hi Doorstep,

Your family are listed in the 1901 Census on this website. Should be easy to trace the births using the Family History Centre, since they are after Civil Registration was mandatory. Also check the British Vital Records Index CD's at the FHC. Also there is a Patrick Gaffney (age 40) and family living in Derreenine in 1901. Could be Jane's brother.

Good luck

Btw, doorstep, JANE GAFFNEY's mother's name would be White, from one of those townlands (possibly Derreenine) or an adjoining one.

hi Paul
have came back to Scotland from Joyce house Dublin today and although looking for my own family (Donegal) found John and Jane's marriage cert 1880 12 Jan. Peter was her father and was marked as being dead. The other witness looks like Ronsia? Whyte. Not to clear on the first name.
She was 25 and John 35yr and as you say came from Derreenine and John from Fostragh. I also have obtained a photo of Jane from my wife's aunt who stays just outside Dublin her father was Michael who died in Clydebank.

Do you know the names of the USA McSheras?

Hi doorstep. The McSheras in the U.S. lived in the Cherry Valley section of the town of Leicester, Massachusetts. I believe there two of the McShera men you listed were there. I don’t remember their names, though. I met them a number of times when I was a teenager and younger. We also used to meet them at a beach near Boston while on vacation. There are McShera descendents still living in that town (some may spell their name slightly different, two r's etc.), which abuts the city of Worcester. I remember my family mentioning a Lizzy Lavin. She lived in Worcester and I believe she may have been Lizzy McShera. I am not absolutely sure of this. We also had Gaffney relatives in Worcester, and she could be one of those (although I do think she was a McShera.) I have a cousin from Ireland. He was in Ireland this September and ran into a McShera, a young guy from the family in Fostragh, in Knockvicar. (Knockvicar is a beautiful place. The canal from the Shannon River to Lough Key runs through it. Many boats with vacationers from all over the world tie up there and there is lively night life and good pubs and restaurants. Many people from other parts of Europe live there, too. It’s a great place for a vacation. (Many people in the area survived The Great Hunger by building that canal, which was used to transport food from the large Rockingham Estate.)

A Patrick McSherra from Fostragh lives in the town of Shrewsbury, also just outside of Worcester. He came here in the ‘50s. He was born in Scotland but his parents moved back to Ireland when he was young. My cousin told me that a relative of his father (my cousin’s father) corresponds occasionally with a Packy McSherra who lives in Scotland. He’s also from Fostragh. My cousin also told me there are Gaffneys from that family still around (two women). I’ve been in Ireland many times. When I was young I met a Jimmy Gaffney, who was also from that family. He’d be in his 60s then. He was a stationary fireman (ran the boilers) at Rockingham House, in the Rockingham Estate.

Worcester was a destination mainly for people from around Killarney, Kerry, since very early times (1830s and on; an Irishman was in charge of building the Blackston Canal from Providence RI to Worcester. He brought in people from Kerry and Cork to work on it). It was also a destination for many Irish from that northern area of Roscommon, Arigna, and immediate adjoining areas of Leitrim and Sligo (the second largest group from Ireland in Worcester). In fact, in looking at the Revolutionary War American Army rolls for Worcester, I saw names that are common to that area of Ireland. However, since ther was a large POW camp for British Army captives in Paxton, just outside of Worcester, it's possible many of these could have been soldiers who changed sides and ended up on the Worcester rolls. Still, there were many Catholic Irish in the American colonies, even from the 1600s, contrary to what many people believe. See

http://search.ancestry.com/db-irish/P30.aspx

There were/are people from most parts of Ireland there, as well.

I hope this helps.
