Mark What townland - what is the name. This is availiable for a fee I believe by townland at the Leitrim Genealogy Center. If you post name and townland some folks have their townland and would probably share info. God Bless Jim Bohan

Good point Jim,

According to the 1901 census, my family had a farm in Drumoghty Beg townland.

I have been at this for months now, and I am having a very difficult time tracing back my relatives past the mid 1800's. My family who is here in the USA really have no memory or connection to their Irish ancestors. Also, the names are so common - it's almost impossible to distinguish them from other families (Mulligan, Reynolds, Reynolds, Daly/Daley).

Anyone have any ideas for making some headway? This is starting to look like a deadend.

Mark On Griffths Survey in 1857 the following persons are listed on the townland of Drumoghty Beg . (Francis Reynolds & James Reynolds) (James Reynolds & John McGuiness) Patrick Reynolds & Henry Reynolds) Henry Reynolds (Bridget Reynolds & Patrick Bembo & Michael Bembo) (Patrick Bembo & Michael Bembo)The landlord was Reps. Samual White. Also on the 1861 Census it only lists name and family make up in numbers ex John bohan male 3 female 2. I do not have the Tithe survey for this townland from 1833. Also there is the 1910 Census. This townland is in the Gorvagh area or neighborhood of Mohill Parish. Also the Tithe survey has 8 families living there in 1833. God bless Jim Bohan

Mark What was your fathers name, your mothers maiden name , your grandfather, and grandmother. Folks like Jim McCabe can be very helpful but he needs a starting point. Like where did they live in the U.S., immigration. Names repeat thru generations fathers brothers , sisters etc. There is a naming pattern for Irish families. God Bless Jim Bohan

Thanks again Jim! I tried emailing the Mohill Parish for info but it looks like I have to make a trip over there unless I want to dish out $400-500 to have geneologists check the records over there.

As for Jim McCabe, he has been very helpful on several occasaions. He was able to provide me with dates and marriage locations.

You are correct about the naming patterns. My grandfather was John Mulligan, his father was John Mulligan who's father was also John Mulligan. That's about as far back as I can get - right around 1840.

Now here is where it gets a little confusing...

My great-grandfather married a Mary Reynolds, daughter of Michael Reynolds, an Englishman and Mary Ann Daley of Leitrim. They lived together in Leitrim after she was disowned by the family for marrying an Englishman. Her parent's had moved their family to Boston in the 1860's but left her behind.

My grandfather's father also married a Mary Reynolds but I don't know her parents or siblings. So basically, I have two different Reynolds connections and can't seem to find records of either.

I guess these things take a lot of time and reseach. I think I have pretty much exhausted Internet research. I really do owe a lot to you and Jim McCabe and everyone else who helps share information with those of us who are trying to learn about our families. Thanks again!
