Nicholl of Clooncarne/Clooneagh and New York

Post by Tom Coughlan »

Just writing this on offchance.
Richard Nicholl of Clooncarne wed Mary Doyle of same in 1880. they had children Ellen, Bridget, Rose, James and Patrick. Richard died in Mohill Workhouse in 1899. 1901 Census DB shows what I believe to be Bridget and James working for Geelan's as servants (Geelan was the surname of the Workhouse master in 1901). The census originals in the National Archives show a RN and a PN in residence in the Workhouse and their ages and place of origin match. But I can't find Mary, the mother, on the census and did not note her death either. Neither can I find the oldest daughter Ellen anywhere. Can anyone throw any light on these 2?

Secondly, I have the emigration records of all 5 children, and am satisfied as to their details. The eldest Ellen probably married a Michael Grey (thanks Ed for finding that for me). I also think James married a Mary from Northern Ireland around 1911 and went on to have at least 6 children: Kathleen, James, Charles, John, Mary and Julia. This Julia married a Robert Cassidy around 1945. Any descendents of Richard Nicholl are cousins of mine, and I'd love to see if I can confirm what I believe (as stated above) and expand my knowledge. It seems quite difficult to access New York information, however. I've scanned Family Search and Ancestry to come up with what I have. Would anyone else researching Nicholl's from Leitrim have any more information they could share of swap?

Regards

Tom
