Nesbitt ancestry in Leitrim.

Post by Pippi de Belfry »

Hi,

I'm new to genealogy, so hope you'll be patient with me ... :D

I've just found that I have some Irish ancestry, my maternal great~great~grandmother was Maria Nesbitt, born in Leitrim, c 1847 (married Joseph Robinson), and my great~great~great~grandfather was Henry Nesbitt also born in Leitrim, c 1821, who married another lady named Maria.

I just wondered if you can advise me as to the best places to try to find records to trace further back?

Many thanks for your time and help,

Pippi

You may be in luck. There were Nesbitts who held land in the COunty. If you are descended from them there could be quite a good deal of data available, from several sources. Can you narrow it down at all - nearest town, or a townland name? The Irish Origins website allows a free search, which might be of some use. It's at www.irishorigins.com. Also, try www.familysearch.org. I was looking up Wills in the National Archives in Dublin yesteday and came across a number of Nesbit(t) entries. I'm sure some of the more experienced researchers can give you good specifics to look at, but you could try the above sites to get a feel for Nesbits in Leitrim.

I am looking at a possible connection between the Nesbitt family that purchased Ballykilcline/Roscommon in 1849 and a Nesbitt family that owned land in Baltimore County, Maryland, USA near where some of the Ballykilcline evictees settled after their forced emigration. In the process of doing that search, I have collected a few websites that might be of interest to a Nesbitt researcher, most notably (long url)
http://www.irishmidlandsancestry.com/co ... esbitt.htm

Some information points to this particular Nesbitt family in Maryland being of Scottish descent.

Hi again,

I did a quick scan on IRish Origins. It shows 22 Nesbit(t) households in Leitrim around 1857. These are all in the Civil Parishes of Annaduff, Cloone and Mohill. Most of those in Cloone and Mohill are held 'In Fee', suggesting these would have been wealthier people. Hope this is of some use.
