McDonnell/Rogers Callaghan/Corcoran

Post by John McN »

I have been trying to research my wife's family,
with little success. Her grand father, Michael McDonnell
married Mary Callaghan in 1901 in New York City.
Both were immigrants.
Michael was the son of John McDonnell and Jane Rogers
of Lisdrumneil.
Mary was the daughter of Timothy Callaghan and Bridget
Corcoran, probably of Frenchpark.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could
proceed from here :?:

Below is the 1901 census data for John McDonnell. I could not locate a Timothy Callaghan in Tibohine parish. There are a few
Bridget Callaghan. You would need to know the siblings of Mary Callaghan to determine the correct record.

Lisdrumneill Tibohine Frenchpark Roscommon Household McDonnell John(55) farmer Jane(56)-Martin(16)-Winifred(14)

Roger McDonnell

Timothy and Thady are the same name.

Frenchpark is the name of the Registrar’s District. The listed LDS Film will show the townland of birth and father’s occupation.

Frenchpark Registrar’s District includes portions of a a number of Catholic parishes. Once you know the townland you can seach the LDS Catholic parish microfilms of baptism and marriage registers.

When you locate the townland, a search of the LDS “Change of occupiers of land” film for the period 1856-1920, might be helpful.

Griffith’s Valuation for Lisdrummell townland includes:
Surname, Given name, Civil parish, Townland,
Callaghan Philip Tibohine Lisdrumneill
Callaghan Owen Tibohine Lisdrumneill
Callaghan Patrick Tibohine Lisdrumneill

With luck Ed Gaffney might search the LDS IGI for you.

Timothy (or Thady) Callaghan and Bridget Corcoran were both born and lived in Cloonfad, not far from Lisdrumneil. I have a lot of information on them as Thady and my great-grandmother Bridget Callaghan were siblings. Why don't you contact me directly at jblanchard@rcn.com. Your wife and I share common gr gr grandparents, who were Cormick Callaghan and Mary Corcoran (Thady's parents). I even had some of the McDonnell information in my tree, but it has been listed as "McDonald" which never made sense to me given the names in the area. I'm happy to have the correction.

Thank you all for your replys to my posting.
I now have several leads which I plan to pursue shortly.
A most interesting fact is that Timothy and Thady
are considered the same name. In the McDonnell line
two descendants of Michael were named Thadeus,
which probably came from Thady Callaghan.
