Seeking information on parents, siblings, townlands of my great great grandparents John Burns (Beirne, O'Beirne, etc) and Bridget Kenny (Kenney, etc) Burns who emigrated from the Elphin area of Roscommon in 1846. John's parents were Martin and Rosa Beirne. John's likely siblings, who came to U.S., include Sarah (married James Flannery), Mary Ann (m. Michael Regan), and Michael. Bridget's father was Michael Kenny. No siblings known. Story goes that Michael Kenny was arranging an unwanted marriage for Bridget. She and John eloped, taking the Stephen L. Whitney to New York City in 1846. They settled in eastern Connecticut by 1847 and had three sons: Martin, Michael, and John.

BEIRNE, KENNY around Elphin, 1820s
Re: BEIRNE, KENNY around Elphin, 1820s
I located a Michael Kenny in the Tithe Applotment Book for the parish of Elphin. He lived in Cloonroughan. The was a Michael Beirne and a Dennis Beirne there as well (in Cloonroughan), but no Martin Beirne listed in the parish. If the name is correct, he may have not had a significant portion of land, or did not own any. I did locate a marriage petition for Martin Beirne who lived in Glan (?) in 1851. (The petitions were through the Church of Ireland and were required regardless of religious affiliation. John Beirne (tulskone@aol.com) is a Beirne family expert. His family was from Cammoge, also in Elphin. You may want to write him. If you would like a copy of the Tithe Applotment Book for Elphin, leave me your snail-mail address.

(part 2)
I located a Martin Beirne (Byrne) who lived in Clooncunny. He was married to Brigid D'Nash. This could be your Martin's son. They had a child in Elphin's baptismal records: Alicia (Elizabeth) 3/3/1870, sponsors: Michael Byrne and Winifred D'Nash.
There was a Martin Beirne baptised on 21 Oct 1841, parents: Fergal Beirne and Margaret McDermott (Cammoge townland)

I have a document listing all the Martin Beirnes I have found and will check the names you gave me against it. I am not familiar, though, with the petition process you mention. I first contacted John J. O'Beirne about 10 days ago; we are messaging. I will e-mail you.

we have a John (1822, Elphin to 1868, Texas, Maryland) and Abigail Dillon BYRNES, who emigrated in 1848. Their daughter, Catherine, married Martin Hyland in Texas, MD. My great Aunt Ellie Kilroy was married to John Hyland, their son.
