ancestry research

Post by Michael Hartner »

Hi,
My name is Michael Hartner. I live in New Paltz, New York. I'm attempting to uncover information about my great grandmother, born Margaret Lynch in Drumshambo, Aughagrania, County Leitrim in 1983 (give or take a year). She emigrated to New York at the age of 16. She died in 1971. I knew her personally. I was 18 at the time of her death. I'm told by my mother (who is still alive) that Margaret was baptized in St. Patrick's Church.
Any information you might provide which might enable me to track down Margaret's birth certificate would be appreciated. (I'd like to pursue Irish citizenship for my children and the birth certificate will enable me to do that.)
Any other information that would enable me to trace genealogy would also be appreciated.
Thank you.

The first thing you could try, is to go to your local Family History Center and order the Birth Indexes for 1880-5. You can then search these for a birth of the same name in the district where she was born. From that info, you can order the film for that particular birth registry, in which you could locate her birth. Or, you could write the the Leitrim Heritage Centre (County Library, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim). Their order form can be found at www.mayo-ireland.ie/geneal/ifhissoc.htm.

This was not a one day trip in the 1800's.
I inquired and was told that Armagh was the official point of registry at that time , regardless of where the baptism took place.
