Sketchy info as well as uncertain spelling makes this especially challenging. This is what I do know: John GUCKIAN/GUCKEEN/GOOKIN changed his name to HACKETT upon arrival in US (approx 1915). Married Mary McWEENY/McQUEENEY. Both from Laetrim. Settled and lived in Bronx,NYC.(John had brother who married Mary's sister;they remained in Ireland.)Mary's sister, also in US was Margaret Rita McWEENY/McQUEENEY MONAHAN.John & Mary had 4 sons:John, James, Thomas,Joseph. John had GUCKIAN/HACKETT relatives in Worcester, MA area.

Tom Dyer
Please e-mail me at PIGnPansy@aol.com ... this certainly sounds promising! I also found out that contrary to my initial info, John Guckian's SISTER (Katie Guckian) married Mary McWeeny's BROTHER (I don't have his name yet) ... I will also have other sibs names soon. Look forward to hearing from you.

My Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather
lived in Bradford, Yorkshire. My Great Grandfather's parents and ancestors were well-to-do pig farmers and lived in Ballybunion, County Killarney
where there is still the remains of the McWeeny Clan Castle. They immigrated to England
during the Irish Potato Famine in the 1850s. I am also looking for the 'American connection' as I was totally amazed when I got on the Internet last year
and found that there have been Mcweenys in America since the late 1800s. And my folks thought we were the only McWeenys in North America!

Jen,
There is a site on GeoCities that is Hackett and Guckian/Hackett. I am also looking for information concerning the name change to Hackett and Guckeen. My Grandfather mentioned something about that years ago. But I was way to young to comprehend. The first arrivals here in the States where in 1849 aboard the Phildelphia that arrived in NYC Dec 31, 1849. The names Patrick Guckeen and his wife Bridget Carter. You can contact me direct to my E-mail address if you would like.
Good Luck
Randy
My maternal grandfather was James Louis McWeeny. I believe his family was from Michigan or Indiana. I bvelive he grew up on a farm in Michigan. He had two brothers, one named Francis or Frank, the other's name I dont recall, but could find out.
I understand the McWeenys were from Sligo or Leitrim.
My grandfather's mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Ganey. I think.
His father's and grandfather's names were also James Louis McWeeny.
His father was one of the early football coaches at Notre Dame and we have a family heirloom watch presented to him from the University.
His father was also at one time the chief of police in Mishawaka Indiana.
His father or grandfather was also world's champion catch-as-catch-can wrestler for five years, beating "The Turk" in Madison Square Garden even though he had a broken collar bone.
The family name came from some one from Scotland who was named McQueen who came over to IReland as a gallowglass and stayed and married in Ireland. THis was during the reformation, the time of Queen Mary.
This is some of the family lore I have. My grandfather said I looked like his side of the family (his brother Frank, to be exact) and had hair just like his mother (long thick curly brunette hair). When I visited Ireland people said I looked like I came from the lake counties.
If you have questions or similar family stories, I would be happy to hear from you.
