Daniel McCabe, 1843-1908, son of Bernard&amp;Bridget

Post by Paul J. Hanley »

Daniel McCabe is my great-grandfather. According to family records, he was born in County Leitrim in 1843 ( this could be in error ), his parents were Bernard ( a name oft repeated in the family ) and Bridget. I have no information on siblings, if any. Daniel enlisted in the 15TH New York Volunteers ( Engineers ) on May 9, 1861. He was 18 years old ( and shortly arrived in NY )and he served for 2 years, as a private, in Co. C, commanded by Capt. Stephen Chester. Daniel was wounded at Fredericksburg, but survived and was discharged " in front of Richmond " on 25 June 1863. On May 9, 1864 ( ironically, the anniversary of his enlistment in the 15TH New York ), Daniel married Ellen Burns ( age 24, born in Ireland, place unknown, daughter of John & ?). Daniel and Ellen were married in St. Marys Church in Lawrence, Massachusetts ( my home town ) and they lived in Lawrence for the rest of their lives. They had 4 children, including Daniel ( my grandfather ). Daniel the younger, a lifelong resident of <br>Lawrence, Massachusetts, himself had 4 children, including Helen ( my mother ) and Bernard ( my uncle ). I have not had extensive discussions with my Uncle Bernard on these matters, but he has traveled to Ireland a number of times and met the "cousins". I don't know if these cousins are the McCabes of Leitrim or the Caseys of Milstreet in County Cork ( grandfather Daniel married Mary Casey, a native of Milstreet ). I recall that my grandmother McCabe communicated frequently with her family in Cork. Uncle Bernard and Aunt Eva had 5 children and my cousins currently live in Massachusetts, New York and Florida. This pretty well exhausts my knowledge of my McCabe link to Leitrim. As for the Hanleys, my paternal grandfather was John Hanley, a native of Ireland, location not known to me. I believe that he emigrated to the United States in the 1890s and he may have traveled in the American west before he returned to Massachusetts and married Mary Fallon, native of Ireland, birthplace unknown. John & Mary had 3 children including, James Francis, my father. My dad attended Villanova University for 2 years during the 1920s. The Hanleys lived in Haverhill, Ma, not far from Lawrence. One of my Hanley cousins has done research in Ireland on the family and I will get in touch with her and see if we are connected in Leitrim or Roscommon. I hope some of this is helpful to some of you and likewise you might be able to help me. Thank you, Paul J. Hanley
