I am researching the origin of the Conboy name. I am nearly(?) thirty living right in the heart of Galway city and so before this place gets too big, as the man says "I'd like to know where the name came from?"....and where it all began..so I'd really appreciate any help.....Thank you.
That's a small start. Then there's the Library; public and UCG, and.....
Yank
He said it meant "Keeper of the Hounds" and that titled families hired young men to care for the dogs that guarded the land and worked the farm. Those young men were called the conboys and that's how the name came to be. Of course, I can't confirm this; it's just a story my dad used to tell. I'd love to know for sure if it's true. I'm unsure if you got my previous posting since I don't see it here, but if I learn any more I'll post again. I think I can contact an organization through the Free Library here that may help. Re:Name origin

Sue's reference to keeper of the hounds is corraborated in Edward MacLysaght's, "Irish Families".He states in part,
that Conboy is a true Irish Gaelic surname. However, there are at least two origins that eventually
became Conboy. In Gaelic, O'Conbhuidhe, suggested meaning-cu'buidhe-yellow hound.
Somewhere else I read that this was a honor(yellow=gold) in terms of guardians/watchdogs of the kings. And so legend grows.
