I am looking for the marriage of Patrick Kerane(Kerawn)<br>to Mary Hardiman probably around 1850 - 1860. They lived in Leitrim townland<br>Roscommon. Any other information on this family would be appreciated.<br>Many of their children emigrated to America where they may have<br>changed their name to Crane.

They lived in Leitrim townland Roscommon.<br><b><br>Hi Joe,<br>I saw your posting, and perhaps it was the reference<br>to Crean that caught my eye, but I decided to play<br>around with some of the resources available on the<br>site here as well as some that I have at home.<p>First I checked my partial copy of the Griffiths<br>name index, and found that I did have the "K"<br>surnames listed. Here is what the Griffiths name<br>index gave for each of your subject surnames.<br><table border=1><tr><th>Surname</th><th>GV</th><th>TA</th><th>Barony</th></tr><tr><th>Kerane</th><th> </th><th> </th><th> </th></tr><tr><th>Kerawn</th><th> </th><th> </th><th> </th></tr><tr><th>Kerrane</th><th>1</th><th>T</th><th>Frenchpark</th></tr><tr><th>Kerrane</th><th>3</th><th>T</th><th>Castlereagh</th></tr></table><br>With this information established I checked out<br>Leitrim, Co. Roscommon, the location of the <br>suspect Townland of origin. The following was<br>found in the townland database.<br><table border=1><tr><th>TOWNLAND</th><th>COUNTY</th><th>BARONY</th><th>CIVIL PARISH</th><th>PLU</th></tr><tr><th>Leitrim</th><th>Roscommon</th><th>Ballintober South</th><th>Kilbride</th><th>Roscommon</th></tr><tr><th>Leitrim</th><th>Roscommon</th><th>Frenchpark</th><th>Tibohine</th><th>Castlereagh</th></tr></table><br>Following this, I went to the L-R Griffiths<br>database and tried the surname Kerrane, seeing as<br>how a large portion of the Barony of Frenchpark<br>has been entered into the database at the present<br>time. Here is what the database provided.<br><p><table border=1><tr><th align=center rowspan=2>Surname</th><th align=center rowspan=2>Given</th><th align=center rowspan=2>County</th><th align=center rowspan=2>Parish</th><th align=center rowspan=2>Townland</th><th align=center rowspan=2>Lessor</th><th align=center rowspan=2>Description</th><th align=center rowspan=2>Acres</th><th align=center rowspan=2>Roods</th><th align=center rowspan=2>Perches</th><th align=center colspan=2>L A N D</th><th align=center colspan=2>B L D G</th><th align=center colspan=2>T O T A L</th></tr><tr><th align=center>Pound</th><th align=center>Shill</th><th align=center>Pound</th><th align=center>Shill</th><th align=center>Pound</th><th align=center>Shill</th></tr><tr><td align=center>Kerrane</td><td align=center>Michael</td><td align=center>Roscommon</td><td align=center>Tibohine</td><td align=center>Grallagh</td><td align=center>Rt Hon & Rev Ld John De Freyne</td><td align=center>Ld (w/1 o)</td><td align=center>2</td><td align=center>2</td><td align=center>10</td><td align=center>0</td><td align=center>10</td><td align=center>0</td><td align=center>0</td><td align=center>0</td><td align=center>10</td></tr><tr><td align=center>Kerrane</td><td align=center>Michael</td><td align=center>Roscommon</td><td align=center>Tibohine</td><td align=center>Grallagh</td><td align=center>Rt Hon & Rev Ld John De Freyne</td><td align=center>Ho gar</td><td align=center>0</td><td align=center>3</td><td align=center>6</td><td align=center>0</td><td align=center>10</td><td align=center>0</td><td align=center>15</td><td align=center>1</td><td align=center>5</td></tr><tr><td align=center>Kerrane</td><td align=center>Michael</td><td align=center>Roscommon</td><td align=center>Tibohine</td><td align=center>Grallagh</td><td align=center>Rt Hon & Rev Ld John De Freyne</td><td align=center>Ld</td><td align=center>11</td><td align=center>2</td><td align=center>30</td><td align=center>2</td><td align=center>5</td><td align=center>0</td><td align=center>0</td><td align=center>2</td><td align=center>5</td></tr><tr><td align=center>Kerrane</td><td align=center>Michael</td><td align=center>Roscommon</td><td align=center>Tibohine</td><td align=center>Grallagh</td><td align=center>Rt Hon & Rev Ld John De Freyne</td><td align=center>* Ld</td><td align=center>6</td><td align=center>1</td><td align=center>22</td><td align=center>1</td><td align=center>15</td><td align=center>0</td><td align=center>0</td><td align=center>1</td><td align=center>15</td></tr></table><p>So, from the above a few things become evident.<br>1. The use of the surnames Kerane and Kerawn were<br> not very popular in Co. Roscommon during the 1850's<br>2. The surname Kerrane was being used as evidenced<br> from both the Griffiths name index and actual<br> Griffiths Valuation data.<br>3. Don't give up your search for Kerrane just yet.<br> As the Townland search engine shows, there is<br> another Leitrim in the Civil Parish of Kilbride,<br> so make sure that you check the Griffiths Valuation<br> for a Patrick Kerrane. Unfortunately the L-R site<br> does not have the Civil Parish of Kilbride loaded<br> into the data base yet....you still have hope!<br>4. Additionally, my Griffiths name index indicates<br> there were also 3 occurrences of the<br> surname Kerrane in the Barony of Castlereagh<br> so you still have some looking to do.<p>Good luck with your continued search<br><br>Ed Finn</b><p>
