A 1849 documents mentions the gaol in Co.Roscommon. How many gaols were there in Co. Rosc., do they still exist? If yes, what are the addresses. Any advice much appreciated.

Any advice much appreciated.:::::: At present there is one jail in Co Roscommon in Castlerea which is only in existence about 3 years. The Jails that you are on about were in Roscommon Town. One of these was situated where the Garda - Police Station now stands and the other one was in the Square in Roscommon Town. The facade of the Jail in the Square is still standing and is being developed as a shopping Mall at present. The other one being totally demolished in the early 1950/s.Further information can be had from Brian O' Carroll, Architect, in Roscommon Town. I thing he had a query on the L/R Pages around the first week in January regarding Lady Betty the infamous Hangwoman who was the cheif executioner in Roscommon Jail in the last century. If you scroll back through these pages you will get his EMAIL address
