In search of any information in regards to the McGreevy Clan. We know of Charles McGreevy (born 1858) and died in NYC (1918). His parent were John McGreevy and Bridget Reynolds from Co. Roscommon. Any assistance on the McGreevys will be much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Mary Jo McGreevy

McGreevy Search
Re: McGreevy Search
Hello Mary Jo,
I have an ancestor from Faraher in Roscommon who was transported to VDL for stealing ducks from a CONNOR GREAVY (ALSO noted as Connor McGreavy) in June 1850. Could this be a connection for you. If so I can fill in a few more details for you.
Regards Noelene Goodwin

Re: McGreevy Search
My great grandfather, Patrick Henry McGreevy (b. Killukin townland, County Roscommon, baptized 1815, Croghan Church) migrated to Hamilton OH in about 1840 and died in Versailles OH in 1863. He added a third e to our surname sometime in his adulthood.
A cousin, Michael McGreevy, was grandson to Patrick's brother, Owen, who stayed in Ireland. His son migrated to the US Midwest in 1880. Michael wrote an excellent family history, of which I made copies at a cost of about US$15 for the 151 page manuscript. I left a dozen copies for sale at the King-Harmon House in Boyle and have a few here. If you want a copy, send me a check for $15 plus a mailing label. If you don't like it, you can return for a full refund.
Michael did about all the genealogical research one can hope for, atleast with respect to one segment, perhaps one-quarter of the McGreevy clan as it existed in 1800.
He thinks there are about 1,500 McGreevy's in Ireland as of 1990, mostly in the six counties of the north. I have come to think that may be an over-estimate. Of my great-great-grandfather's US descendants, there are at least several hundred in the US. Many of them now have different names, of course.
We plan a big family reunion on the weekend of 20 August 2000 in Boyle and Lough Key State Park. Please be there.
bill mcgreevey
2911 P Street
Wash DC 20007-3069
By the way, the current Minister of Finance of Ireland is Charlie McCreevy !! And the President of Ireland, Mary MacAleese, born near Croghan, is probably your cousin !

The McGreevy Clan. We know of Charles McGreevy (born 1858) and died in NYC (1918). Re: McGreevy Search
And Hello Noelene:
I hope to hear more about duck stealing. An earlier McGreevy ancestor is alleged to have stolen the horses of St. Patrick in the fifth century. So ducks may fit a long pattern.
Can you explain two things in your note? What does the acronym VDL symbolize? And where in Roscommon is Faraher? So far as I know, most McGreevy's lived for centuries in Moylurg, an area that post-Cromwell became the barony of Boyle, between the Curlew Mountains and the River Shannon, all in north Roscommon. The different spelling to which you refer may signify a different geographical group.
Any enlightenment to offer?
Greetings from Bill McGreevey
PS we plan a big family reunion in Boyle and Lough Key State Park the weekend of 20 Aug 2000. Re: McGreevy Search
My first viewing of the bulletin board, so these comments are little late. My name is Wayne McGreevy and I live in Brisbane, Australia. The McGreevy name has multiplied greatly with 5 sons in my family. My grandfather John McGreevy (born 1891?) son of John McGreevy and Ellen Boland migrated to Australia with his sister Katie in 1912. His brothers Patrick and Michael and sister Annie had migrated earlier. John and Ellen are listed as living at "Doon", Strokestown.
I am trying to research my family back in Ireland but am finding the going slow with no real connections there. If anybody has any advice or other information on the McGreevys I would be interested to hear it.
