I was told that there was a McNiff family tartan. Does anyone know what it is/ have a picture of it. I would appreciate any help.
Sean

Tartan
Re: Tartan
: Ireland has nevr used tartans, Sean. The history of tartans is Scottish. Read 'Scottish Clan and Family Names', by Roddy Martine or 'The Highland Clans' by Moncreiffe and Hicks. I just look in both books (there is a MacMillan on my tree) and did not see your surname. Many folks would love to tell you there is a tartan for your surname, however, to take your money. If your family tree is from Ireland, save your money.
Och, Aye Laddie, the always reliable Maureen is correct. What's more is that MacLysaght lists your name as the Leitrim variant of Cunniff and "Scottish Clans & their Tartans," (1931) does not list MacNiff as a Clan, Sept or Dependent. So, you're stuck with us lot! Welcome!

Re: Tartan
Is this the same Sean who bore an uncanny resemblance to a young JFK. If so don't look for tartan go straight up to Paddy Conlon and ask him for the price of a new tartan. Tell him I sent you!!: I was told that there was a McNiff family tartan. Does anyone know what it is/ have a picture of it. I would appreciate any help.
: Sean

Re: Tartan
What about these Irish county and city tartans that are being flogged today? How long have they been around? I have a kilt with the Co. Wicklow tartan which I picke simply because I liked it, not for any maudlin genealogical association.
Patrick Byrne
Vancouver BC, Canada
