This is the first that I have written to you, partly because I have so little information. I don't know where my Roscommon ancestors were from and the best that I can do is put together a collection of names, some definitely related and others connected. My great, great grandfather Patrick Finn and his wife Catherine Tingle (poss. Single, Lingle) were from Roscommon and settled in Crescent, N.Y., about 10 miles from Schenectady. Patrick immigrated c. 1846, but he experienced enough of the famine to retain wery strong memories of it. In 1855 they had an Irish family living with them named Buttery/Buttry -- no known connection. The rest of the ancestors settled in Schenectady, N.Y. in the 60's, 70's, etc. Patrick's older sister Mary married a James Cox in Ireland -- two known children, Patrick and Michael. An educated guess would say that Patrick and Mary Finn had a sister who married a Daly. Another guess would be that Mary Finn and James Cox had one or two daughters who married Buttlers. Othr connected families were Fitzmaurice (from Roscommon), McHenry, Brennan, Lyons and McDermott. From 1850, there were two McDermott families in Schenectady, both using many of the same first names, and one was married to a Mary Conry. In 1900, two McDermotts signed legal documents for my grandmother and claimed to be her closest relatives -- but I don't know where the connection is.]
On the 1880 census, Schenectady - ward 3 only - the Irish county was listed. The group from Roscommon seems to be relatively small and my hope is that some of them may be from the same area.
There also was a Lavin family in Schenectady -- a grade school classmate of mine -- but I don't think that I ever heard that we were related. However, Finn plus Lavin causes me to be interested in your reasearch. The Finn name (in the area) was more common in Albany, Troy, Watervliet and Saratoga N.Y. and most of the famine era Finn's were named Patrick.
Elinor

Hi Elinor,
I have been tracing the my Great-grandfathers Journey to American and finally located his grave and that of his wife, sons and daughters in a little town on the Hudson River called Victory Mills. I did find three large cementeries with many Irish names including Flynn, and in the smaller of the three is a cox. I know that my Great Grand father came from Roscommons from cork co. to NYC and then up the Hudson via passenger boat to Victory Mills were he worked in a textile mile. From Victory Miles the family spread to Watervaliet, Schylerville, Albany, NY City, Syracuse, and Elmira. The Families that they Married into are: Hawkins, Farrell, Cooney, and Theirbault. I hope this helps...Linda
: : : My ancestors include the following:
: : : Finn and Cox from Co. Roxcommon to Schenectady
: : : c. 1865/70; Finn and Tingle from Co.
