In the 1840's, families from the Strokestown-Sliabh Bawn area of Roscommon settled around Weston, W.Va. Listings from St Bridget's (Goosepen Run) & St Bernard's (Lovebury Ridge) cemeteries indicate that most had left Kilgefin parish. Also mentioned are Kilbride, Cloonfinlough and Strokestown parishes. Family names include: Gillooly, Cox, Copley, Connell, White, Collins, Murray, Hanley, Loghan, Moran, Hayden, McLaughlin, Rush, Fitzpatrick, Farrell plus many more.
Many of the men served in Company B, 15th Virginia Infantry during the Civil War. When oil and gas deposits were found on their land in the 1890's, some sold their properties and moved to other parts of the U.S. It is thought the Collins family went to Texas.
Are there any descendants out there who could help us re-create the life and times of their ancestors at 'Murray's Settlement'? I am a member of a group which is preparing a history of the Sliabh Bawn district of Roscommon for publication in 2000. We would love to include the story of how these families came to select Lewis County as their new home after leaving Roscommon. All inquiries welcome.
