Parishes, Baronies etc

I live in Australia and I am trying to use sources such as Griffith's Valuation etc, but I don't understand what is meant by all the different parishes (Catholic and Civil), Baronies, and Townlands. I have found several maps of these, but they don't relate to any maps showing current towns or land marks. My relatives came from Strokestown but it is hard to relate this to the parishes etc. Is there anywhere that explains ( for an out-of-towner) what these mean and how they relate to each other?

Griffith is<br>based on Baronies which are made up of Civil parishes which in turn consist of Townlands. There are several McGreevey families still in<br>the Strokestown district.
